Dan Marino
It's hard to believe that University of Pittsburgh star Dan Marino was only the 27th draft pick in 1983! But by the sixth week of his rookie season, Marino had won the starting quarterback job for the Miami Dolphins. Though five other quarterbacks were drafted ahead of Marino – including Hall of Fame members Jim Kelly and John Elway – the Dolphins knew they had their quarterback for many years to come; 17 years, in fact! He threw 20 touchdown passes his first year, earning the NFL Rookie of the Year title and selection to the NFL Pro Bowl. Oh, and Miami ended up with a 12-4 record and the AFC East title.
In his second year with the Dolphins, Dan Marino shattered the season touchdown passing record of 36 – held jointly by Football Hall of Fame members Y.A. Tittle & George Blanda – with 48 TD passes, an increase of 33%! (That would be like beating Barry Bonds' season home run record of 72 by hitting 96 homers!) By the end of his second season in Miami, Marino had set six National Football League records and was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player (MVP)!
By the end of Dan Marino's 1995 season with the Miami Dolphins, he had replaced Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton as the NFL's long-standing career passing leader in attempts, completions, yards, and touchdowns. At the end of his 17th, and last, season as a professional football player in 1999, Marino had amassed staggering statistics, including 420 touchdown passes ... a record that still stands, but is threatened by the Green Bay Packers' Brett Favre, the only other member of the 400 Touchdown Club™!
